Route Description
The trek from Concordia to K2 Base Camp follows the Godwin-Austen Glacier, offering spectacular views of K2, Broad Peak, and the surrounding 8,000m peaks. This challenging day hike covers approximately 12 kilometers round trip with significant elevation gain on difficult glacial terrain.
Starting from Concordia (4,600m), you’ll follow the lateral moraine of the glacier before crossing onto the glacier itself. Navigation can be challenging as there’s no single defined path – the route changes seasonally as the glacier shifts. The terrain consists of loose rock, ice, and snow, requiring careful footing throughout. After approximately 3-4 hours of hiking, you’ll reach K2 Base Camp (5,150m), marked by colorful tents and prayer flags during climbing season.
Terrain & Hazards
Hidden crevasses are present throughout the glacier. Stay alert, follow the marked route, and trek with experienced guides.
Loose rocks on slopes pose rockfall hazards, especially in warmer afternoons. Wear a helmet when crossing active areas.
Weather can change rapidly. Always be prepared with extra layers, even on seemingly clear days.
At 5,150m, altitude sickness is a serious risk. Acclimatize properly and know the symptoms.
